Starting Out

Frugal in Virginia has a great post about taking baby steps toward saving money. Number four is particularly important to me:

4. Plan before shopping. Before I go shopping, I typically write down or type out the “must-have” sales I want to hit at each store with all the transaction details including prices and coupons I plan to use… So do what you need to do to stay organized and thwart any confusion that may happen once you hit the stores.

Every Sunday night, after clipping and sorting coupons, I sit down with the flyers for Walgreens, CVS, and any other store I might be interested in going to that week. I flip through the ads, and if I see anything that I might want to get I see if I have the coupon in my binder. I then take a small notebook and write out what I need to do to get the deal, such as: “CVS: Covergirl Lipcolor (here I add any specifics of the deal that I need to remember) B1G1 and B1G1 MFG coupon.” That way, I know that CVS has Covergirl Lipcolor on sale for B1G1 and that I have B1G1 coupons for it. If I don’t do this, I get so flustered in the store and I end up missing stuff. So this keeps it streamlined, and by writing down the specifics of the deal, I have a lower risk of purchasing the wrong thing (and then not getting a deal on it!)
